Buljarica Marsh with rare guest: Eurasian Thick-knee

We walk along a narrow pebble beach in the middle of Montenegro’s Adriatic Sea. We’ve seen a lot of birds here already. Really remarkable this time is not only a Black-winged Stilt (Himantopus himantopus), which stands on the coarse gravel directly at the waterline, but also a Eurasian Thick-knee (Burhinus oedicnemus), which we observe a… Continue reading Buljarica Marsh with rare guest: Eurasian Thick-knee

Steppe habitat just outside Castilla de la Mancha

The Spanish province of Valencia was visited in summer. One reason was to relax for a week. The second argument was to get a feel for avian delights of an area of the country normally thought of in mainstream tourism terms. As a habitual visitor to the more well-known birding destination of Andalucía and Portugal,… Continue reading Steppe habitat just outside Castilla de la Mancha

Eurasian Thick-knee (Burhinus oedicnemus) in Croatia´s karstic landscape

On the southern edge of the island Pag you can enjoy the ample stony lowlands of the island´s disorientating karstic landscape. With large, sideways eyes, the Eurasian Thick-knee peers into the twilight. It is still almost dark; only the first glimmer of the morning over the mountains on the coast of Croatia is visible. A… Continue reading Eurasian Thick-knee (Burhinus oedicnemus) in Croatia´s karstic landscape

Triel in Karstlandschaft

Continue reading Triel in Karstlandschaft

Senegaltriel in ausgetrockneten Bachbett/ Kamerun

Continue reading Senegaltriel in ausgetrockneten Bachbett/ Kamerun

The Dupont‘s Lark at Las Almoladeras in Spain

Although recent research and an action plan by SEO regards the Dupont‘s Lark (Chersophilus duponti) as highly on risk in Almeria, this area is still worth a try.  This Lark is probably one of the highly thought-after bird species if travelling to and birdwatching in southern Spain. I photographed it in mid May 2002. First… Continue reading The Dupont‘s Lark at Las Almoladeras in Spain

Little Bustard (Tetrax tetrax) photography in Extremadura

The sun is still high in the sky, although it is almost 6:00 pm. As far as the eye can see : steppe, interrupted now and then by eroded rocks . Above the ground , the air shimmers . In the car there is indescribable heat. After last year’s winter precipitation had failed in the… Continue reading Little Bustard (Tetrax tetrax) photography in Extremadura

Fall migration at the Black Sea Coast/ Romania

Spectacular numbers of Pallid Harrier, Circus macrourus, and Red-footed Falcon, Falco vespertinus, were the highlight of the first day. Having spent 3 days in May north of Constanta at Romania´s Black Sea coast, it was decided to try our luck with birds again in the area around the village of Vadu. The target was, to… Continue reading Fall migration at the Black Sea Coast/ Romania
