Stephen’s Place: a paradise for Barbets in Bukit Fraser

On the edge of a green mountain forest, right in the heart of Malaysia, stands a large tree whose branches are laden with an abundance of ripe treasures of red fruits. An almost unlimited number of fruits dangle in the canopy between dense emerald green foliage. A lively spectacle unfolds here for a few days a year. The focus is on some lively bird inhabitants, including the Red-throated Barbet (Megalaima mystacophanos).

From an elevated vantage point at Stephen’s Place, B&B, in the middle of Bukit Fraser (formerly Fraser Hill) in Malaysia, you can see these barbets as well as Red-bearded Bee-eater (Nyctyornis amictus), Black-browed Barbet (Megalaima oorti), Blue-eared Barbet (Megalaima australis), Green Broadbill (Calyptomena viridis) and Orange-bellied Leafbird (Chloropsis hardwickii), sometimes at eye level and up close. Nestled in the foliage of the fruit tree, the barbet not only finds food in abundance but also a place of refuge that is largely protected from view. With its powerful beak and colorful plumage, the barbet is a testament to nature’s artistry. Decorated in shades of green, blue, yellow and red, its feathers blend seamlessly into the lush surroundings and harmonize perfectly with the colors in the canopy.

Stephen’s Place is a family B&B – focused as the ideal place for nature lovers.  I stayed at Stephen’s B&B for 4 nights in March and was not disappointed. Stephen and his wife arrange an excellent setting for nature lovers. We had good, long conversations with Stephen in particular. He gave us good tips and explained a lot about the birds. His device in the garden is particularly great in this context, with which he attracts countless butterflies/moths at night. They act as a food source e.g.  Red-bearded Bee-eater. Some of the moths are incredibly large for european standards.

My room was on the lower floor of the „old“ house. I had a pleasant size and the bed was comfortable. Now in February it was remarkably fresh at times. The breakfast was freshly prepared, rich and varied. If you want you can also get a dinner in the B&B as well.

The house is beautifully situated in the wooded mountains above the little town of Fraser’s Hill.

The accommodation is quite expensive by Malaysian standards, but due to the perfect birding prerequisits, the remote location and the warm service and great food the package is more than acceptable.

In order to meet the growing demand for top images of the rarer species of Palaearctic Bird-lens.com has specifically made trips to remote places. Additionally every chance is used, if a rare bird is around the homeground. This to do everything to ensure excellent photos of the Birds of the Western Palearctic . The yield of pictures also of rare Western Palaearctic birds is very good. There are other nice images of birds, that you will find behind the tab “Picture Shop“. Just give a notice if you need a picture of a bird which is not online.
