Songbird migration along the southern Black Sea coast

The roosting Red-backed Shrikes (Lanius collurio) are all juveniles. One has taken a long morning bath and is now shaking its wet feathers on a stick in the morning sun. Again and again the wings are spread, shaken and then placed one on top of the other. In particular, a tiny garden with runner beans… Continue reading Songbird migration along the southern Black Sea coast

Dancing in the Rain: a Coot

There are only remnants of the former alluvial forest belt along the Rhine between Bonn and Düsseldorf. Thick clouds stand over the Rhine near Cologne-Porz. A humid temperature, as it is not unusual for the Cologne Bay in summer. Reluctantly at first: drizzle. Then a rain shower pelts the relics of an alluvial forest in… Continue reading Dancing in the Rain: a Coot

A memory of a Pterosaur

An image that could have come from a book about pterosaurs due to the monochrome background of a late afternoon sky. A larger winged animal is being chased by a tern against a pinkish-gray sky. The body posture or the cutout from a body turn seems almost artistic and unusual. Although, the background of the… Continue reading A memory of a Pterosaur

An Graureiher (Ardea cinerea) standen… Continue reading Kaiseradler im Randowbruch zwischen Grünz, Zehnebeck und Zichow

Birding Berlin: Ducks in winter in Charlottenburg Palace

A splash drops of water, a wild tumult. Just a moment ago the two male Mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) had been standing side by side on the ice-plate. Now they quarrel like crazy. Most of the short but intense fights end with the… Continue reading Birding Berlin: Ducks in winter in Charlottenburg Palace

Grey Heron fighting with a Common Newt

Although at the beginning it just stands silently on the edge and obviously lets… Continue reading Grey Heron fighting with a Common Newt

Waders at Lake Neusiedl

Land under water in Poland

In the 18th century settlers made the long, marshy lowland area of the Warta and the river Netze habitable. Individual farmsteads and villages from that time can still be seen from the dike of the Warta. None of the houses has no stork nest. Today, only the diked areas at the Warta estuary reminds of… Continue reading Land under water in Poland
