Hawfinch in an apple tree

Rain drips from the apple blossoms. The branches sag slightly under the weight of the water. And there, hunched and still, sits a Hawfinch (Coccothraustes coccothraustes). It looks too heavy for the branch, too solid for a songbird. But it’s perfectly at home, blinking slowly through the drizzle, its massive beak tucked against its chest like a sleeping hammer.

The Hawfinch is the largest finch species in Europe, instantly recognizable by its thick, powerful bill. In April, it frequents orchards and broad-canopied trees, where it feeds on seeds, buds, and fruit stones. Rain doesn’t drive it into cover; rather, it sits motionless, conserving energy and waiting for the weather to break. This makes it easier to observe during wet spring days.

The Hawfinch favors mature deciduous and mixed woodlands, especially those with Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus), Cherry (Prunus spp.), and Beech (Fagus sylvatica). Old orchards and large gardens also serve as suitable habitats. It nests high in trees, often hidden deep in the canopy.

Historically widespread across Europe and into western Asia, the Hawfinch’s range has shown subtle shifts. In parts of Western Europe, local declines have occurred due to habitat loss and reduced food availability. However, recent decades suggest slight expansions northward and to higher elevations, possibly influenced by climate change.

Despite its elusive nature (at least in summer and fall), the Hawfinch remains a fixture of temperate woodland ecosystems. In spring rain, its quiet presence in the apple tree speaks to a life perfectly adapted to the rhythm of wet blossoms and heavy seeds.
