A rarity in Krkonoše-Mountains: the Alpine Accentor

We actually see the first Alpine Accentor (Prunella collaris) at the summit of Sněžka, the highest peak in the Krkonoše, or Karkonosze – Moutains, which are also called „Giant Mountains“. As we were just leaving the plateau we see 9-12 individuals of this species calling and flying around the houses in the immediate vicinity of… Continue reading A rarity in Krkonoše-Mountains: the Alpine Accentor

Pink-footed Goose in Rudow-Altglienicke/ Berlin

This time there was no need to patiently monitor flocks of geese with a spotting scope in windy weather and sleet and snow showers. It was cool and wet, but the Pink-footed Goose (Anser brachyrhynchus) in the Landschaftspark (landscape park) Rudow-Altglienicke could be seen quickly in flocks with Greylag Geese (Anser anser) and 2 Greater… Continue reading Pink-footed Goose in Rudow-Altglienicke/ Berlin

Dusky Thrush near airport Berlin-Brandenburg

Around 11:30 a.m. the sun sent the first tentative rays through thick clouds which contained heavy rain only minutes before. In the afternoon of the previous day, a Dusky Thrush (Turdus eunomus) was sighted in a flock of Fieldfares (Turdus pilaris). In a 3rd attempt and after a good 2 hours of waiting the salvation… Continue reading Dusky Thrush near airport Berlin-Brandenburg

Kurzschnabelgans in Berlin

Continue reading Kurzschnabelgans in Berlin

Bird migration on the edge of the Eifel

Beginning of October is the best time to observe migratory birds near a hill called Tötschberg or Toetschberg in the Eifel. It was still twilight when I arrived at the Bürvenicher Berg which is opposite to the Tötschberg, located at about 246m above sea level. In front of me the expanse of the Zülpicher Börde,… Continue reading Bird migration on the edge of the Eifel

Common Redstart on top of a nesting box

So far, the spring retreat for the Common Redstart (Phoenicurus phoenicurus) was the forest behind the farming house. His choppy vocals had been heard over and over again. A male Common Redstart had obviously been able to warm up for an old nesting box on the edge of the forest in May. In the beginning… Continue reading Common Redstart on top of a nesting box

Save a young European Starling

A European Starling (Sturnus vulgaris) tears its beak wide open and presents its orange-yellow throat. Ist mothers prey is quickly stuck in his throat. What sounds like an everyday story in the breeding season of Starlings could mean the last meal for the young European Starling. It has been raining the whole day. The blades… Continue reading Save a young European Starling

Dusky Thrush as rare vagrant in Germany

It was a bit of a sensation. A Dusky Thrush (Turdus eunomus) was sighted in a flock of Fieldfares (Turdus pilaris) in the middle of the Erzgebirge (Iron Mountains) near Stollberg, south-west of Chemnitz in south-eastern Germany. A Dusky Thrush discovered 4 years ago on Helgoland was the only report that I was able to… Continue reading Dusky Thrush as rare vagrant in Germany
