Saih al-Salam, paradise in the midst of semi-desert and acacia savannah in the Emirates

The first chains of Sandgrouse appear early in the morning. Still, it is remarkably cool. But very soon, the air will be heatened up to the highest degrees. Sandgrouses do not only arrive quenching their thirst on the extensive waters. Species such as the Arabian Chestnut-bellied Sandgrouse (Pterocles exustus erlangeri) and Pin-tailed Sandgrouse (Pterocles alchata)… Continue reading Saih al-Salam, paradise in the midst of semi-desert and acacia savannah in the Emirates

AZERBAIJAN – a birding trip in late migration time

INTRODUCTION The goal was to use 4 days off and a public holiday to go on another birding trip to a distant country after the corona pandemic had ended. This was also a reconnaissance trip to investigate birding destinations in western Asia. We didn’t want to linger long with stopovers at any airport. So the… Continue reading AZERBAIJAN – a birding trip in late migration time

Juvenile Great Grey Shrikes: first days outside the nest

End of May. Loud, plaintive shouts echo from a willow bush on the edge of a wetland directly on a canalised lowland river in southern Brandenburg. Small, short-tailed, high-contrast black and white birds slip between leafes and branches calling loudly. It quickly turns out. They are young Great Grey Shrike or Great Gray Shrike (Lanius… Continue reading Juvenile Great Grey Shrikes: first days outside the nest

Junge Raubwürger nach dem Ausfliegen

Ende Mai.

The first returnees from migration: the Black Kite

An Graureiher (Ardea cinerea) standen… Continue reading Kaiseradler im Randowbruch zwischen Grünz, Zehnebeck und Zichow

Imperial Eagle near border of Eastern Germany

A fresh summer morning with a steel-blue sky opened the day. In front of the steel-blue sky over the Zichow forest in the Randowbruch only 10 km away from the polish border, raptors are circling up in the air. One of them is strikingly different. Red Kites (Milvus milvus) circle around him and – after… Continue reading Imperial Eagle near border of Eastern Germany

Flight photography of the Red Kite

It takes no special effort to see a Red Kite (Milvus milvus) in Brandenburg. But to be successful with more than a photograph of proof takes more. It is of little interest to scan a Red Kite at a distance or high up in the sky. The straight-forward search flight can go seamlessly into a… Continue reading Flight photography of the Red Kite
